Some golfers aren’t going to like this…

Golf is a changing. Bubba Watson and Ian Poulter showed that perfect silence is not necessary to play golf. This really is nothing special, athletes in other sports have been performing with the crowd screaming since competitions began. Why should golf be any different? As long as there is no sudden change in noise, there is no reason why you can’t perform well in this environment (sudden noise is a distraction – just think what happens if someone screams in a crowded, but silent, room). I actually think it gives you an advantage – the noise distracts you while your subconscious is free to strike the ball.

The other thing, the screaming and cheering is probably a lot better than the conversations many golfers have going on in their head. The noise should be a welcome distraction.

Many traditionalists won’t be happy but maybe this is the kind of thing needed to give golf a kick in the right direction. If nothing else, it’s refreshing to see some golfers not take things so seriously.

I must admit if it is really quiet you will be distracted by sudden sound but I find with my regular playing group their is the occasional bit of chatter from time to time and it does not worry me in actual fact I think it helps my AG because I have no swing thoughts.

Brilliant…..this should be incorporated onto the first tee of every tournament…possibly at each player’s discretion 🙂

I reckon the average weekend warrior would actually play better if everyone chatted amongst themselves while he played his shot. The “deathly silence” thing just makes it all seem oh so serious.

Agree. A little noise is real. Too many of us take things too seriously when it comes to hitting that little ball.

Yeah I didn’t think there was anything wrong with it at the Ryder Cup. It added a lot more atmosphere to the event and made it even more exciting for the players and fans. I have my doubts on whether it will catch on in regular season events, but I enjoyed watching it.

I agree it might be an advantage to a lot of golfers if there was more noise. Anything to disrupt the ‘monkey chatter’ in golfers brains is definitely a good thing.
