Some poor golf coaching from me today

Off the mark today

Notes: It’s ok to make mistakes, you’ve just got to be aware of them or evaluate after the event. I’ve definitely learned some stuff today and it felt good to talk about it.

Just curious, what was the object of your lesson with David? Did you guys set out with a specific goal? James

James: I wasn’t at my best and there wasn’t really a definitive goal this time round 🙁 I have reviewed the lesson and certainly learned some stuff for next time…

I guess my question is whether or not I should have a specific goal when practicing? I know classical thought would say yes, but I wasn’t sure with automatic learning.

James: I think it depends. Sometimes you might just want to experience the joy of hitting the ball and enjoying the fresh air and not care too much about the result (I suppose this is a goal too). And other times, you might want something more specific. But you should always try and choose something that you’re in control of and can measure.

Improving my swing plane is a bad goal.

Hitting balls and noticing/feeling the clubhead is a better one.

Thanks, Cam. What caught my attention is that I tend to hit the high ball, and each time I go to misery hill to work on keeping it low has not been very productive. I am much more successful on the course by swinging automatically. These days about all I use the range for is hitting a handful of balls before playing to loosen up. 🙂
