The golf talent myth

What’s the secret to playing better golf?

The secret to improving your golf is turning up to play. And you’ve got to do this often.

You can’t go reading about it or watching it on TV. You’ve gotta get outside and play the game. You’ve got to get your hands dirty.

If you can’t hit bunker shots then what’s stopping you?

Oh, you have a slice? Then get outside and learn the difference between what a hook feels like compared to a slice ball.

Many of us are so scared about hitting a bad shot that we’re scared to move. We turn up and play the same way time after time – sadly, expecting a different result.

The best players play the game. They practice. They experiment and challenge themselves. And they do this often.

Physical talent has little to do with it. Some of the “talented” ones are just lazy and can’t get out of their own way long enough to make a breakthrough or are too busy listening to everyone telling them how good they are.

If golf is more important to you than just fun then you’ve got to do something. Focus on what you want and go for it. But the trick is to do something, and often. Talent has little to do with it.
